Medical Laboratory Science Program
Tuition for the 11-month (45-week) clinical program is $7,300 (subject to change).
The billing arrangements for students enrolled in their college/university are pre-determined and stated in the affiliation agreement signed between the University and Hospital. Check with the Program Director or your college/university advisor for your institution’s arrangement; tuition options in the affiliation agreements may include:
- the student pays no college tuition; UPMC Chautauqua WCA bills the student, or
- the student pays college tuition; UPMC Chautauqua WCA bills the college and also bills the student any difference if UPMC Chautauqua WCA tuition exceeds the college tuition.
Tuition will be billed in two installments; the first payment (Rotation I) is due no later than November 15th (Fall) and the second payment (Rotation II) is due no later than March 15th (Spring). (Note: the deposit submitted upon acceptance to the Program is utilized to pay for the certification exam at the completion of the program year).
Checks are to be made out to "UPMC Chautauqua WCA" and payments are to be turned in to the Program Director who will generate a receipt. Credit card payments can be made directly to UPMC Chautauqua WCA’s Accounts Payable with proof of receipt turned into the Program Director. Paying in installments (see options below) can be done and must be set up with the Assistant Controller soon upon commencing the program. All tuition must be paid by the stated/agreed upon deadline(s) or a student will be dismissed from the program.
Tuition payment options:
- Payment of Fall and Spring tuition by due date on respective bills.
- Deferral of payment with proof of receiving of a scholarship. Proof of the coming scholarship is required and must be submitted to the Assistant Controller for approval of deferment.
- UPMC Chautauqua WCA “loan” with interest (prime rate + 2%) for eight (8) months. Students will meet with the Assistant Controller at the beginning of the internship year to set up the payment plan and sign a promissory note for scheduled payments.
- Students needing to have payments spread out over a longer period of time will have to obtain a personal loan from their own lender.
The purchase of the required textbooks is the responsibility of the student and may be purchased through a book distributor which offers a discount to our students (Pro Forma program with Rittenhouse Book Distributors) or the student may find other sources (please note: UPMC Chautauqua WCA receives no financial benefit from utilizing this company when ordering textbooks, only ease of service and student-benefit pricing). Rittenhouse will contact each student directly with the required book list and offer on-line or manual methods of ordering texts at a discount. A student is to have all required books in his/her possession at the start of the internship year; these texts will be actively utilized throughout the year. If a text(s) is not available through Rittenhouse, the hospital will obtain the required text(s) and students are required to purchase the text(s) (payment to UPMC Chautauqua WCA) during the first week of classes.
The current cost of books for the whole internship year is approximately $600 (subject to change).
If a student withdraws or is dismissed prior to completion of the program, no monies will be refunded (paid deposit, tuition, etc.). Any outstanding bills, including textbook fees, fall tuition and/or spring tuition (depending on time of departure), must be paid in accordance with the policies outlined in the Student Handbook.
Other Student Expense Responsibilities
The following list includes items not provided by the program or UPMC Chautauqua WCA and any financial obligations related to these are the responsibility of the student.
- Housing - leads on area apartments/housing are provided to students at the recommendation of past students. Ample housing opportunities are available in the area.
- Food - meals are available in the Hospital’s cafeteria at the employee-reduced rate. Many students brown-bag their lunch; a refrigerator and microwave are available.
- Transportation - the distance of housing and shopping centers from the hospital may require the use of a vehicle or other form of transportation.
- Personal clothing - an official dress code is made available to the accepted students. Attire suitable for a patient-service environment is expected, including scrub-type uniforms and a conservative, professional appearance.
- Lab coats needed for specimen handling or patient care are provided and laundered by the hospital. A personal, professional lab coat (white or colored) is optional.

- Certification examination (fee covered by the acceptance deposit) and/or licensing fees.
UPMC Chautauqua WCA does not participate in the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation Student Loan program or in federal loan programs. Students who wish to obtain financial aid must do so through their college or university.
