Journey Gunderson and Tom Benson Keynote Speakers at Doctors Day Celebration
JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK (Sunday, March 19, 2017)—Journey Gunderson, executive director, National Comedy Center, and chairman, Tom Benson, will be the keynote speakers on Friday, March 31, at a celebratory Doctors’ Day luncheon that commemorates the National Doctors’ Day observance. The luncheon, given by hospital leadership, salutes the medical staff at UPMC Chautauqua WCA that consists of more than 170 dedicated physicians representing over 30 medical and surgical specialties.
The keynote presentation will underscore the National Comedy Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit cultural institution in Jamestown, NY, that is developing the first national visitor experience dedicated entirely to the art of comedy. The Center is comprised of three functions: the immersive exhibit experience / museum that is under construction now, a year-round calendar of live performance and discussion-leading programming on comedy, and an educational component supporting aspiring artists and providing comedic arts education. The center will be located next to the Jamestown Gateway Train Station.
“National Doctors’ Day is the perfect opportunity to honor our physicians,” said Betsy T. Wright, president, UPMC Chautauqua WCA. “As we enter a new era of health care to provide world-class care locally, we extend our grateful appreciation to our medical staff who partner in our mission to improve the well-being of our patients and this region.”
National Comedy Center chairman, Tom Benson, has seventeen years of extensive and varied public accounting experience including twelve as a partner with Buffamante Whipple Buttafaro, P.C. He was instrumental in the development, negotiation and closing of the sale of these companies. Tom's public accounting experience, coupled with his direct manufacturing management experience, give him an understanding of what it takes to be successful in today's business climate.
Executive director of the National Comedy Center, Journey Gunderson, has been named one of Buffalo Business First’s “Top-Forty-Under-Forty”, Chautauqua County’s Person of the Year, and the YWCA Women of Achievement’s “Young Leader of the Future”. In 2014, she was asked to join a nationwide panel of comedy industry professionals as a voter in NBC’s American Comedy Awards.
Preceding the keynote presentation, James Campion, MD, board-certified gastroenterologist, president of UPMC Chautauqua WCA medical staff, will present the prestigious 2017 Physician of the Year Award—an honor given annually to an outstanding physician in Chautauqua County who is recognized for his or her significant practice experience, compassion, community involvement, and commitment to a healthier community.
The first Doctors’ Day, held on March 30, 1930, in Winder, Georgia, was inspired by the wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond and marks the anniversary of the first use of general anesthesia in surgery by Dr. Crawford W. Long in 1842. On March 30, 1958, the United State House of Representatives adopted a resolution commemorating Doctors’ Day. In 1990, the congress and the senate approved legislation establishing National Doctors’ Day. The resolution designating March 30th as National Doctors’ Day was signed by President George Bush.
On Thursday, March 30 (National Doctors’ Day) the community is invited to remember their physician(s) and the many ways in which they promote, maintain, and restore health.
