Jamestown, New York (Wednesday, September 1, 2010)—In celebration of WCA Hospital’s 125 Anniversary and as a way to provide additional options for employees and the community wanting to eat healthy natural foods, WCA Hospital will host the “WCA Farmers’ Market—Wellness Wednesdays” beginning on September 8 and continuing every Wednesday through October 27, to sell fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and fresh breads.  The Farmers’ Market will be held at the WCA Hospital Pearl City Café’, located in the Main Lobby at 207 Foote Avenue from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.  The Market is open to the public.

Every Wednesday, the Market will offer locally grown fruits and vegetables.  The September 8th  Market items include, oranges, Granny Smith apples, watermelon, cantaloupe, pears, pineapple, strawberries, fresh fruit cups, yogurt parfaits, radishes, scallions, asparagus, snap peas, snow peas, orange peppers, green peppers, yams, red potatoes, carrots, squash, fresh herbs and breads, lettuce, and hummus.

Individuals who purchase 12 items from the Farmers’ Market will be entered in a weekly drawing for a $25 gift card from local businesses.

“We are very excited about this initiative as it demonstrates our pledge to the health and well being of our employees as well as our community,” said Betsy T. Wright, WCA Hospital President/CEO.  “Wellness is such an important initiative at WCA.  We are dedicated to promoting a healthy lifestyle for our patients, guests and staff and the Farmers’ Market is another way we can show our commitment to wellness.”

In addition to local produce and products, staff from WCA Hospital’s Nutritional Services including a certified personal trainer, Wellness, and Diabetes staff, will be on hand to discuss the nutritional value of eating fruits and vegetables, tips on diet and fitness, and the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.  The staff will also provide quick and easy recipes ranging from easy-to-cook vegetable and chicken dishes to healthy desserts that consumers can cook at home in minutes. Free cancer education materials, made possible from the Allen Short Cancer Education and Screening Fund grant, will be offered.

“We want it to be convenient for our employees,” said Toni DeAngelo, R.N., WCA Hospital Community Health & Wellness Program Director.  “It’s a part of our worksite wellness program and we want our employees and guests to have access to locally grown fruits, vegetables and healthy food options in a family-friendly environment. Studies have shown that people who eat a lot of fruits and vegetables may lower their risk of chronic disease such as heart disease and some cancers.  We encourage our community to stop in, browse, shop, eat and chat with our hospital experts about the benefits of eating healthy.”

Christina Reynolds, WCA Hospital Hospitality Director, adds that it is a “fabulous opportunity” to offer fresh food products from our local agricultural community.  “Every week we will bring something new and different, from farm fresh vegetables to tantalizing fruits and mouth-watering breads.  When you shop at our Market, you support our local farmers while taking home healthy, nutritious vegetables, fruits and more.”
