Jamestown, New York, (Thursday, December 16, 2010)—Lead sponsor officials from Truck-Lite Company in partnership with major sponsor officials from Cummins Inc., United Refining Company (Kwik Fill Stores), and Alstar announced that LINKS Charity raised $74,689.54 from the 19th Annual LINKS Charity Pro-Am golf tournament, golf scramble, and silent auction banquet that benefit the WCA Hospital in their continuing efforts in the fight against cancer.  The charity event was held this past August at Moon Brook Country Club, Jamestown.

According to the event program committee, proceeds from the charity will be applied to the second year of LINKS Charity’s three-year pledge of $250,000 toward the purchase of a new full field digital mammography imaging system in the WCA Center for Imaging & Medical Arts.

“When people come together for a great cause, great things happen,” said Brian Kupchella, Truck-Lite Company, Inc., President and COO and lead sponsor for the 2010 charity.  “Because of the tremendous generosity from our major sponsors, businesses, players, contributors and volunteers, we were once again able to provide critical funding for WCA Hospital in their efforts to provide patients with local, advanced cancer care.  This success is a testament to the passion and hard work of our Committee members and everyone involved in organizing our event.  It is truly an honor working with so many wonderful, dedicated people with the same commitment and focus.”

“LINKS Charity has been extraordinarily supportive of WCA Hospital,” said Betsy T. Wright, WCA Hospital President/CEO.  “We are grateful for their longtime partnership of our nationally recognized cancer care program.  These funds enable us to provide state-of-the-art technology for the prevention and early detection of breast cancer which means faster intervention and improved cancer survival rates.  We are extremely committed to maintaining the best cancer care program in the region and give our sincere appreciation to all of our LINKS supporters who share in our vision to provide new and advanced methods to prevent, treat and beat cancer.”

“We extend our warmest gratitude and thanks to our major sponsors, Cummins, United Refining Company and Alstar, for their continuing invaluable support in making this event possible,” added Brad VanRiper, Truck-Lite Company Sr. Vice President and Chief Technology Officer and LINKS Co-Executive Director.   “We look forward to another successful tournament in 2011 and another chance to make a difference in the fight against cancer.”

Featuring twenty-five LPGA members, Monday’s LINKS Pro-Am enjoyed a full field.  The winners in the Men’s and Mixed Division first-place team were: LPGA member Jenny Gleason and amateurs Dean Weaver, Stan Lundine, Margaret Alessi and Gary Johnson. The Women’s Division champs were: LPGA member Nicole Jeray, Mary Blair, Susan Sellers, Paula Morris and Patty Swanson.  On Tuesday, the winning teammates in the traditional scramble event were Greg Pond, Mike Troman, and Glenn Mueller.  A LINKing Together Banquet & Silent Auction and Golf clinic and scramble were also held during the two-day golf event, raising additional funds toward the charity.  The banquet event included remarks from guest speaker Kevyn Adams, who played for the Carolina Hurricanes when they captured the Stanley Cup and is now a member of the Buffalo Sabres hockey operations staff.

Since its inception, LINKS Charity has contributed in excess of $650,000 to the WCA Hospital cancer care program, including donations to the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and LPGA Foundation.  Funds at WCA have been used to advance the medical care and treatment of individuals diagnosed with cancer.

The funds have been applied toward state-of-the-art cancer care medical equipment; prevention and early detection programs; educational materials; low cost mammograms, pap tests, and community wellness screenings; new Computed Tomography (CT) Scan; new MRI, brachytherapy, microwave for the treatment of prostate cancer; Endoscopy equipment; 3D cancer treatment planning sentinel node biopsy; Stereotactic breast biopsy; operating room cysto/urology suite; fixed MRI, laboratory equipment, palliative care renovations; and dollars for recruiting highly-skilled physicians and health care professionals.

LINKS Charity, established in 1991, was co-founded by Mrs. Mary Blair and Mrs. Sondra Anderson.  Their commitment and passion along with benevolent volunteers including Allen Short, Executive Director for the past 19 years, has realized hundreds of thousands of net proceeds that have benefited the WCA Hospital Cancer Care Program.

For 125 years, WCA Hospital has been the region’s healthcare leader.  The WCA Cancer Care Program is the only comprehensive program in Chautauqua County to hold a prestigious three-year approval with seven commendations from the Commission on Cancer (COC) of the American College of Surgeons.  The three-year approval with commendation is the result of the hospital’s commitment to integrating clinical excellence, programs and community outreach.  WCA Hospital is one of only 1,350 programs across the country that has earned approval from the Commission on Cancer.  In New York State, only one in four share this prestigious honor.

In 2011, LINKS Charity will celebrate its 20th Anniversary (August 1-2), once again at Moon Brook Country Club in Jamestown.  Businesses and/or individuals interested in golfing with the LPGA professionals, or serving as an event sponsor, may contact Mrs. Barbara Brown at (716) 661-1265.
