(L to R) Cristie Herbst, Vice Chair of the W.C.A. Foundation, joins JoAnn DeMarco, Patricia (Barone) Hurtack, and Kathleen (Barone) McMaster, members of the Marie Barone Memorial Golf Tournament Committee, to announce details for this year’s 17th annual tournament, including that event proceeds will be utilized to create the Marie Barone Memorial Fund, an endowed fund with the W.C.A. Foundation to benefit women’s cancer care at WCA Hospital.

Jamestown, New York (Thursday, February 10, 2011)—The Marie Barone Memorial Women’s Golf Tournament Committee has announced that the 17th annual tournament will be held on Monday, June 27, at South Hills Country Club in Jamestown. Since 1995, nearly $100,000 has been raised by this annual tournament to aid in the fight against cancer.

“We want our efforts to make a real and lasting difference by assisting female cancer patients here in the Chautauqua Region for many years to come,” says Patricia Hurtack, Tournament Chair and daughter of the late Marie Barone. “With this in mind, we have joined hands with WCA Hospital and the WCA Foundation to establish the Marie Barone Memorial Fund.”

“On behalf of the W.C.A. Foundation Board of Directors, I am very grateful to the Barone family and the tournament committee for choosing to benefit local women who are courageously battling cancer,” says Cristie Herbst, Vice Chair of the W.C.A. Foundation. “Going forward, the proceeds from our tournament and interest earned by the W.C.A. Foundation from this new endowment fund will be used for the diagnosis, care, and treatment of female cancer patients right here at our community hospital.”

“All the money we raise will go directly into this new endowed fund in memory of my sister,” says Mrs. JoAnn DeMarco. “We have set a goal of $15,000 for 2011 and trust that golfers and businesses will come alongside us to pay tribute to her and help us reach our ambitious goal.”

The Legacy of Marie Barone
Marie Barone was active – very active! She was an energetic mother, sister, bowler, and golfer, while working full-time. Marie was the last person you would think would be at risk for cancer. Tragically, Marie passed away at the age of forty-five after a courageous battle with colon cancer. Despite the challenging circumstances, she remained upbeat and optimistic throughout her illness.

Marie’s mother, Lillie Munella, also lost her battle to cancer. Marie’s sister, JoAnn Demarco, remembers, “After mom’s death, Marie became my surrogate mother and best friend. She was always there for me and I was always there for her. Losing my sister was like losing my mother all over again. I understood how her daughters felt and recognized how important it was that as a family we continue to honor Marie’s memory.”

“At that time of Marie’s passing (early 1970's), cancer research and treatment had not reached the level that it has today,” continues JoAnn. “Now, we have the capabilities to detect a wide range of cancers and the specialized treatment options available to give women a better chance of living a long and productive life. To have these vital resources available close to home here at WCA Hospital is so important. This golf tournament is a tangible way that our family and friends can continue the fight against cancer and is a perfect tribute to Marie’s legacy.”
