Community Blood Bank Urging Donors to Give During Critical Summer Months

Jamestown, New York, (Thursday, June 16, 2011)—The Community Blood Bank (CBB) of Western New York and area hospitals are urging all eligible donors to donate blood during the summer months as these are typically difficult times to collect sufficient blood amounts that meet hospitals’ blood-supply demands. 

No appointments are needed and drives are open to the public. 

Community Blood Bank bloodmobile drives will be held during the month of June at Busti Church of God, 996 Forest Avenue Ext., Monday, June 20, 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.; WCA Hospital Auditorium, 207 Foote Avenue, Tuesday, June 21, 7 a.m. – Noon; Frewsburg American Legion, 9 Meadow Lane, Frewsburg, Monday, June 27, 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.; and Wednesday, June 29, WCA Hospital Auditorium, 1:30 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Community Blood Bank bloodmobile drives in July as follows, Friday, July 1, Presbyterian Church, Fredonia, 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.; Tuesday, July 5, Bocton American Legion, Brocton, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Thursday; July 7, Brooks Memorial Hospital, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Friday, July 7, Heritage Village, Gerry, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Monday, July 11, Harvest Chapel, Fredonia, 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.; Wednesday, July 13, Cassadaga Fire Hall, 3 p.m. – 6 p.m., Thursday, July 21, Jamestown BPU, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.; Monday, July 25, WCA Hospital Auditorium, Noon – 5 p.m.; Wednesday, July 27, Meeer’s Ripley, 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Requirements to donate blood include, must be at least 16 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds; pass a brief mini-physical and medical history review; have proper picture identification; and follow normal eating patterns before donating.

“A single blood donation saves up to three lives,” said Jon Sundholm, BS, MT, (ASCP), WCA Hospital Clinical Laboratory Supervisor.  “Donating blood is easy, and in most cases, it takes less than 45 minutes from the time you walk in to the time you leave.  We are encouraging all eligible donors to donate blood so area hospitals can maintain an adequate blood supply during the summer months.  Giving blood is a great way to commit to charitable giving to local patients in need of blood.”

The Community Blood Bank of Western New York is the exclusive supplier of blood products to all the hospitals in Erie, McKean, Warren, Potter and Elk Counties and is the preferred provider to all the hospital in Chautauqua, Cattaragus, and Allegany Counties in New York.
