ICAEL Accredited Echocardiography Laboratory

Jamestown, New York (Friday, February 4, 2011)—WCA Hospital officials are pleased to announced that the hospital was granted Accreditation status by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL).  The WCA Hospital Heart Center’s Echocardiography Laboratory has been awarded Accreditation in Adult Transthoracic, Adult Transesophageal and Adult Stress Echocardiography testing.

Participation in the accreditation process is voluntary.  Accreditation status signifies that WCA Hospital has been reviewed by an independent agency which recognizes the Laboratory’s commitment to quality testing for the diagnosis of heart disease.

“We are honored to be the only facility in the Southern Tier to receive this distinction in all three specialty areas from the ICAEL,” said Betsy T. Wright, WCA Hospital President/CEO.  “Our accreditation is a tribute to the hard work, skills and expertise of physicians, nurses, clinicians, and support staff who deliver superior care at the WCA Heart Center.”

A transthroacic echocardiogram, or cardiac ultrasound, is a standard echocardiogram that uses a probe on the chest to see images.  Transeasophageal echocardiograms involve the use of a specialized probe containing an ultrasound transducer at its tip that is passed into the patient’s esophagus to obtain images.  By studying cardiac flow and structure, echocardiographic testing is useful in the detection and management of many types of heart disease.  The noninvasive test has become on of the standard diagnostic tools in cardiology.  An adult stress test is a type of exercise-tolerance stress test that includes an ultrasound of the heart.  The test shows the motion of the heart’s walls and pumping action before and after exercise.

“Every patient who receives an echocardiographic examination at WCA can feel confident that they are receiving high-quality care from experienced and skilled clinicians using state-of-the-art equipment,” adds Daniel Johnson, PT, WCA Hospital Director of Rehabilitation.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.  On average, 2,200 Americans die of cardiovascular disease each day, according to the American Heart Association.  Each year, approximately 10 million echocardiograms are performed in the United States.
