Since official launch of clinical information exchange, approximately 20% of Chautauqua County residents have signed a consent form

JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK – It’s been one year since WCA Hospital began participating in HEALTHeLINK, Western New York’s clinical information exchange, and to date 25,000 Chautauqua County residents have recognized the importance of giving their physicians access to their medical information electronically at the point of care by signing a consent form. In addition 12 area physician practices are also currently participating in HEALTHeLINK.

“WCA Hospital, Chautauqua County physicians and residents are seeing and better understanding the value HEALTHeLINK has on their health care,” said Daniel Porreca, executive director, HEALTHeLINK. “We applaud WCA Hospital on its use of HEALTHeLINK, and the outstanding efforts in accepting consent forms and educating patients on HEALTHeLINK and its importance in improving the delivery of care, enhancing clinical outcomes and reducing health care costs.”

Last February, WCA Hospital became the first hospital in Western New York serving a rural community to participate in HEALTHeLINK. Through the clinical information exchange, WCA Hospital and local physician practices can share and view patient medical and clinical health information electronically. Once a consent form is signed by the patient, physicians and other health care providers who are involved in the patient’s care can securely access their lab results, tests, radiology reports, transcribed reports, medication information and a wide range of other health information to better treat the patient. Through HEALTHeLINK physicians can avoid duplicating tests and x-rays that might have been recently done and monitor medications that may have been prescribed by another physician to avoid drug interactions.

“WCA Hospital is excited to be able to offer its patients and referring physicians access to HEALTHeLINK,” said Betsy T. Wright, WCA Hospital President/CEO.  “HEALTHeLINK is at the forefront of creating a truly functional regional health information exchange network and we are pleased to be part of this partnership and proud to take a leading role in helping to shape the future of our region’s healthcare system. By building on the accomplishments of our collaboration with HEALTHeLINK, we will continue to develop a seamless clinical information exchange that improves patient care.”

In addition to WCA Hospital, Jamestown Primary Care is one of 12 Chautauqua County practices participating in HEALTHeLINK. According to Kathy Stanton, office manager, “HEALTHeLINK has allowed our physicians to stay apprised of the health status of their patients as they receive care at specialists and hospitals throughout Western New York. We have also been able to avoid duplication of lab tests which lowers costs and provides a more patient-centered approach to care.”

Approximately 12% of the population or 170,000 in Western New York’s eight-county region have submitted their consent forms to date. In addition, about 170 physician practices and more than 900 physicians are currently participating in HEALTHeLINK.
