Jamestown, New York (Tuesday, June 14, 2010)—WCA Hospital officials announced they were awarded a $50,004 grant from the Western New York Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.  The grant funds will be used for the purpose of breast health education, breast navigation and breast screening program; and implementation of the Breast Screening for LIFE Club – a new program at WCA with the goal of increasing the rate of adherence to mammography screening practices for women 40 years of age and older.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer.

“As an approved American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer accredited program at WCA, it is our commitment to reduce the risk of cancer through education, prevention, early detection, and top-rated treatment programs,” said Betsy T. Wright, WCA Hospital President/CEO.  “This generous grant offers us the opportunity to decrease incidences of breast cancer and reduce the overall cancer mortality.”

“The best protection is early detection,” adds Toni DeAngelo, R.N., WCA Hospital Community Health & Wellness Director, and grant coordinator.  “Studies show that timely screenings can prevent a substantial number of deaths from breast cancer.  However, for a variety of reasons, many women do not schedule their mammograms as often as they should and it is proven that well-timed screenings with mammography can prevent breast cancer fatalities.  Our grant helps women overcome the “barriers” to good breast care that may keep them from getting their mammogram screening on time.”

A portion of this year’s grant allocation will be used to implement a Breast Screening  for LIFE Club – a program at WCA Hospital that provides a “one stop shopping” breast health education and screening experience to encourage women to access breast health services.  “The program will be offered four times a year,” says DeAngelo.  “Each woman, age 40 years and older who has an appointment, will receive a free clinical breast exam by a licensed nurse practitioner, a screening mammogram, along with breast health education from a certified breast health nurse specialist on the same day.”

WCA Hospital is the largest hospital in Southwestern New York and is committed to providing breast health services of the highest quality.  Designated a “Breast Imaging Center of Excellence”, the Center For Imaging & Medical Arts at WCA provides SAME DAY MAMMOGRAM results and has expanded its health and wellness program with the addition of a nurse specialist who is specially trained and certified to coordinate the clinical, educational and supportive needs of consumers who are scheduled for breast health services at the Center For Imaging.

The WCA Center For Imaging is open Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and offers convenient Saturday hours from 7:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
