Jamestown, New York (Tuesday, June 7, 2011)—After providing hot meals to seniors in the Jamestown area for the past 42 years, the Office For the Aging Senior Nutrition Program in collaboration with the Jamestown Area Meals on Wheels program has awarded the contract to WCA Hospital to prepare meals to homebound seniors throughout southern Chautauqua County.

As of June, 2011, WCA Hospital has served 21,000 meals to homebound seniors.

All meals are prepared daily at WCA Hospital including hot noon meals, double meals which include lunch and dinner, supplemental meals and frozen weekend meals.  The meals are delivered each day by a combination of paid drivers and community volunteers.  Meals are delivered generally between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. each weekday.

“As we discovered, by working for WCA Hospital right here in Jamestown, we are able to cut the cost of the Meals on Wheels program, increase the dollars we are able to invest in the program, and deliver more meals for less,” said Greg Edwards, Chautauqua County Executive.

Christina Reynolds, WCA Hospital Director of Hospitality Services who oversees the Meals on Wheels operation at WCA added, “We are truly committed to doing a great job.  We prepare approximately a 500 hot, cold and supplemental meals each day to our clients.  Home delivery recipients get a hot meal every Monday through Friday, plus some frozen meals for the weekends.”

The Meals on Wheels of the Jamestown Area has been around since 1969, providing hot and cold home-delivered meals each weekday to individuals in its service area.  Meals on Wheels of the Jamestown Area delivers Monday through Friday in most of Chautauqua County, including the areas of Bemus Point, Busti, Town of Carroll, Celoron, Chautauqua, Clymer, Ellery, Ellicott, French Creek, Frewsburg, Town of Harmony, Jamestown, Kiantone, Lakewood, Mayville, Mina, Town of North Harmony, Panama, Poland, Ripley, Sherman and Westfield.

Barrie Yochim, Director of the Meals on Wheels Program in Jamestown, states, “Seventy-five percent of the meals WCA Hospital prepares are delivered within 15 minutes of Jones Memorial Health Center, meaning our seniors are receiving hot, fresh meals served right to their door with minutes.”

"I am so pleased that WCA hospital sought and was awarded the contract," added Dr. Mary Ann Spanos, Office For the Aging Director.  “Not only are they able to provide high quality great meals, but we anticipate this will lead to additional improvements in the coordination of services for the frail elderly who we both serve.”

Last year, Meals on Wheels served 115,000 hot and cold meals to residents in Southern Chautauqua County.

Each year, Meals on Wheels serves more than 140,000 meals in its service area of southern and central Chautauqua County, New York.  About 500 different individuals receive meals from Meals on Wheels each month.
