Jamestown, New York (Wednesday, May 12, 2011)- In recognition of Better Speech and Hearing Month in May, WCA Hospital will offer free hearing, speech, and swallow screenings Wednesday, May 18th and Thursday, May 19th, by appointment only. Certified Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists at WCA Hospital will offer the free screenings by appointment only to the public for those 2 years of age and older.

Area residents are asked to contact the WCA Hospital Speech and Hearing Department at (716) 664-8194 to schedule an appointment.

Since 1927, May has been designated Better Speech and Hearing Month, at time to raise public awareness of speech and language disorders that affect millions of Americans.

The screenings are offered to identify new or suspected communication or hearing problems.  If the screening identified a problem, recommendations will be offered by licensed and certified speech-language pathologists and audiologists.  “Our annual free screenings are an effective way of aiding in the detection of communication and hearing disorders, enabling the prevention of serious impairments to those at risk,” said Robert Piede, MA, CCC-A, Director of Speech and Hearing.

The Speech and Hearing Department at WCA is staffed by Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists licensed by the State of New York and Certified by the American Speech Language and Hearing Association. The Department is an approved New York State Department of Health Diagnostic and Treatment Center for patients with communication disorders.

A limited number of appointments are available.  For more information on WCA Hospital Speech and Hearing Department, visit www.wcahospital.org.
