Volunteers from the Southern Tier Kidney Association (L to R: Sam Pellerito – President, musician Richie Leeper, Jeannette Ostrom – WNY Kidney Connection, and kidney transplant recipient George Pavlock) show off the 2012 Kidney Challenge Walk t-shirts in preparation for their June 10th fundraising walk at the Lillian Vitanza Ney Renaissance Center.

Jamestown, New York (Friday, May 18, 2012)—On May 3rd, the Southern Tier Kidney Association (STKA) hosted a kick-off event at the Dr. Lillian Vitanza Ney Renaissance Center in downtown Jamestown to announce the details for the 2012 Kidney Challenge Walk. This fundraising walk will take place on Sunday, June 10th (Registration at 12:00 noon and Walk at 1:00 p.m.) with the Renaissance Center serving as the new host site and starting point.

In addition to a new site location, the STKA also unveiled its new Kidney Challenge Walk logo featuring the color green and green ribbon (representative of the fight against kidney disease) and a butterfly representing the tribute butterfly release which takes place just prior to the walk each year. The logo was created by volunteer Chris Anderson. Each individual who registered to walk at the kick-off event received a free Kidney Challenge Walk t-shirt featuring this new logo.

The STKA also announced that the third annual Kidney Challenge Walk is being presented by corporate sponsors Artone, LLC and DaVita. The event will feature live music, a post-walk cookout, and basket auction. At 12:45 p.m., tribute butterflies will be released In Memory of or In Honor of those who have been impacted by chronic kidney disease.

There are many opportunities to participate in this charity event. The Southern Tier Kidney Association would like to encourage individuals, families, co-workers, and friends to register to walk, form a team, make a tax-deductible gift, or sponsor a tribute butterfly on-line at www.SouthernTierKidneyAssoc.org. Individuals and businesses are also being asked to consider donating items for the basket auction.

“As volunteers, the Southern Tier Kidney Association is so excited about this year’s Kidney Challenge Walk and the opportunity to improve the care and treatment of local dialysis patients,” said Jeannette Ostrom, a volunteer for the 2012 Kidney Challenge Walk.  “We encourage everyone to join us to not only raise valuable dollars, but to also pay tribute to loved ones who have or are battling kidney disease.”

The STKA has set a goal to raise $15,000 at this year’s event as proceeds will go toward the purchase of a solution warmer and vital signs monitors for the benefit of kidney patients served by the WCA Hospital Dialysis department. Through the success of last summer’s Kidney Challenge Walk ($10,000) and other fundraising efforts, the STKA donated a total of $17,595 to WCA Hospital to purchase ten heated recliners, including three oversized recliners, to provide greater comfort to patients undergoing dialysis.
