Jamestown, New York (Friday, October 25, 2013)—Recognizing the importance of keeping older adults independent and reducing their chances of falling, the WCA Center For Orthopedics, Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation, will host a free presentation entitled, “Falls Prevention Seminar”, Wednesday, October 30th, 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at the WCA Hospital Auditorium, located at 207 Foote Avenue, Jamestown.

Physical therapists at WCA Hospital will assess residents for their risk for falling and demonstrate exercises techniques for preventing falls at the seminar.  The program is free and open to the public.  Registration is not required.  First 50 people will receive a free tote bag.  Light refreshments will be served.

Keynote speaker, Daniel Johnson, P.T., Director of Rehabilitation Services at the WCA Center For Orthopedics, Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation, will discuss why adults fall and ways to help individuals maintain independence and remain active by reducing the risks of falls.

“Estimates indicate that one in three adults over the age 65 fall,” says Johnson.  “The Centers for Disease Control states that falls can cause moderate to severe injuries, such as hip fractures and head traumas, and can increase the risk of early death.  Fortunately, falls are largely preventable.  The goal of our presentation is to educate and inform our community on ways they can prevent falls and reduce their chances of falling.”

Daniel Johnson is the Director of Rehabilitation Services at WCA Hospital.  He graduated from Jamestown High School in 1967 and served in the United States Marine Corps from 1968 until 1971 prior to attending college.  He is a graduate of Jamestown Community College and received his degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Buffalo where he received the Verona J Blair Memorial Award in 1976.   Prior to returning to Jamestown, Dan was a physical therapist at Millard Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo.  In 1984, he published an article entitled "The Use of Electrical Stimulation in the Treatment of Chondromalacia Patella" in the Physical Therapy Journal of Clinical Management.  In 1990 , he was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award at Jamestown Community College.  He is currently a member of the American Physical Therapy Association.
