Jamestown, New York (Wednesday, August 21, 2013)—WCA Foundation has named Krista Perry, a WCA Hospital Emergency Department nurse, as the 2013 Mary Lou Messina Scholarship scholar.

Mrs. Perry is working on a goal to become a nurse practitioner in the Jamestown area. She is currently pursuing her BSN degree as a full-time student of Gannon University in Erie while working as a per diem nurse.  Some of her course requirements were realized through Jamestown Community College. She reached this educational level while working nights for 20 to 30 hours a week for the last 13 years in the school of nursing, nuclear cardiac studies, orthopedics and currently as a flight transport nurse at WCA Hospital. Mrs. Perry says she is also a very dedicated mother of two middle school children and the wife of an exceptionally supportive husband.

The Mary Lou Messina Scholarship was begun in 2004 by Phil Messina to memorialize his wife who was an energetic, effervescent, intelligent, success-oriented leader. Mrs. Messina's legacy as a nurse in critical care areas of WCA Hospital helped create the criteria to be met by the scholarship's annual recipient who is to emulate her personality and love of nursing.  As a young nurse, Mrs. Perry used Mary Lou Messina as a role model and mentor, which she hopes she has become to her younger co-workers.

Scholarship funds are one way WCA Foundation supports WCA Hospital, its employees and the community. In 2013, the Foundation will award more than $30,000 to enhance the education of the outstanding employees of WCA Hospital like Nurse Perry.
