Jamestown, New York (Wednesday, July 9, 2014)—WCA Hospital, the region’s leader in healthcare, has been named one of the Healthiest Employers in Western New York Award Finalist (in the large category) by Buffalo Business First.  Forty-one companies were recognized as healthy employers in Western New York based on employee surveys facilitated by Healthiest Employer®, a national analytics and data research firm.

The award ceremony honored local companies that provide the best health and wellness benefits for their employees.  WCA Hospital was recognized for promoting health and wellness among staff members through a number of health initiatives including, tobacco cessation counseling program, pre-diabetes prevention program, cafeteria health talk education program, re-think your drink program, facility gardening initiative, mobile farmers’ market, walking route facility program, healthy vending meal program, educational public service announcements, and wellness and health marketing initiatives.

Toni DeAngelo, R.N., WCA Hospital Community Health and Wellness Director and certified tobacco cessation counselor, accepted the honor for WCA Hospital at a special awards Luncheon and Wellness Fair held at the Buffalo Convention Center, in Buffalo, New York.

“I commend the employers who are leading their local wellness journey and congratulate them for being part of this year’s Healthiest Employer®,” said Rod Reasen II, CEO of Healthiest Employer LLC.  “Their outstanding efforts are helping to improve the lives of their employees, families, community, and our nation.”

“It’s an honor to be recognized as one of the choice companies who share a mission to promote and safeguard the health of our employees,” said Betsy T. Wright, WCA Hospital President/CEO who was recently awarded CEO Cancer Gold Standard™ Employer reaccreditation for taking concrete actions to reduce the cancer risk of employees and their families.    “Being identified for our efforts reaffirms our investment in the health of our greatest asset—our employees.  While patient care is our top priority, employee wellness is engrained in our culture and critical to the overall success of our hospital.  We continually strive to create a healthy work environment through a number of health initiatives that help staff reach their goals through educational and fun, interactive worksite wellness initiatives that give them the tools to stay healthy over their lifetime.”

The Healthiest Employers® Program utilizes an online assessment tool to evaluate measures that score worksite wellness programs in comparison to regional and national employers.  The six categories that are assessed include culture and leadership commitment, foundational components, strategic planning, communication and marketing, programming and interventions, and reporting and analysis.  Benchmark scores are generated using a proprietary system that automatically ranks an organization based on individual answers.

Independent Health President and CEO, Michael Cropp, proud sponsor for Western New York’s Healthiest Employers Health Fair said creating healthy work environments help employees make long-lasting and meaningful changes.  “As healthcare costs continue to rise, it’s more important than ever for us to take a role to encourage healthy habits that help drive down the costs of care and improve outcomes,” Cropp said.  “However, greater work demands and full family schedules make it difficult to fit in exercise and take the time to consciously make healthier choices.  As the majority of one’s time is spent at work, it makes sense to create a culture of good health in our workplaces by providing individuals with easy and accessible ways to engage in their health.  We congratulate all of Western New York’s Healthiest Employers award finalists, as well as all of the employers doing their part to achieve a healthier workplace.”

“Our intention is prevention,” said Toni DeAngelo who coordinates and facilities the hospital and community wellness activities and programs.  “Our workplace health promotion programs are designed to support healthy behavior not only in the workplace but carry over to our employees’ ability to improve the overall health of their families.  Through health education, screenings, health coaching, weight management programs, wellness newsletters, on-site exercise and fitness programs, and other wellness activities, we are able to educate, motive and change behavior that facilitates and improves the overall health and well-being of our employees.”

The WCA Hospital Community Health and Wellness Program provides a comprehensive health education and disease prevention program that promotes healthy living and lifestyle choices that enhance the quality of lives for the people of Chautauqua County.  The hospital’s wellness program reaches over 12,000 people annually through screenings, presentations and various programs, and works extensively with area health agencies, businesses, schools, community agencies, service groups and individuals of all ages to encourage and adopt healthy lifestyle habits.  The program’s healthy lifestyles basics include eat right, exercise, manage stress, maintain ideal body weight, and schedule annual physician appointments and screenings.
