Jamestown, New York (Friday, March 6, 2015)—The WCA Hospital Diabetes Education Center team invites the community to attend the WCA Diabetes OPEN HOUSE, Tuesday, March 24th, which includes a free foot screening.  Podiatrist, Darrell Hoppes, D.P.M., doctor of podiatric medicine, on the medical staff at WCA Hospital, will perform the screening.  Guests will be screened on a walk-in basis during the Open House from Noon to 3 p.m.  Dr. Hoppes provides care at the WCA Hospital Wound Care Center, located on the 3rd Floor of WCA.

The WCA Diabetes Center recently moved to its new location at Jones Memorial Health Center, 51 Glasgow Avenue, Jamestown, New York.  Patients may enter the new site by using Baker Street or Glasgow Avenue entrances.  The education center is located next to the WCA Cancer Treatment Center.  The hospital’s program, recognized by the American Diabetes Association®, provides diabetes education for those diagnosed with type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes.

Dr. Hoppes will perform the screenings to identify individuals at risk for foot complications.  “Foot health is very important for people with diabetes since the condition is often linked to poor circulation and disease of the nerves,” said Dr. Hoppes.  “Our foot screening can help identify individuals who may be at risk for diabetic or debilitating foot complications.”

Darrell Hoppes, D.P.M., received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine medical degree from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a Master of Medical Education degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Erie, Pennsylvania.  He is a practicing podiatric medicine physician provider at Podiatry Associates, located at 844 Fairmount Avenue, in Jamestown, New York.  He resides in Warren, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Jessica.

The new WCA Diabetes Center offers front door handicap accessible parking; a spacious teaching classroom for individual sessions and group education forums; and wireless internet access for patients who wish to take notes electronically.  The American Diabetes Association recognizes WCA’s service as meeting the national standards for diabetes self-management education.  The program supports an excellent learning environment that teaches individuals skills which embrace, nutrition and diet therapy; helpful tips on exercising your way to health; medication management including insulin pump therapy; preventing, detecting and reducing risks related to diabetes disease; healthy lifestyle behaviors; and caregiver and family support.

Kerry Mihalko, registered dietitian, certified diabetes educator, and Donna Thor, diabetes education assistant, serve as full-time staff at the Center.  Wolf-Dieter Krahn, M.D., board-certified in family practice medicine, is the medical director for the WCA Diabetes Education Program, and Maureen Kohl, R.N., Nurse Manager serves as hospital leadership.

“If you are affected by diabetes, the American Diabetes Association® offers helpful tips for taking care of your feet,” said Kerry who has served the community as a certified diabetes educator for 15 years.  “Check and wash your feet every day.  Wear shoes and socks at all times and protect your feet from hot and cold temperatures.  It is recommended that you wiggle your toes and move your ankles up and down for five minutes, two or three times a day, to keep the blood flowing to your feet.”

The Open House will also include free blood pressure checks, cooking demonstrations, snacks, and giveaways.  Individuals are invited to take the type 2 diabetes on-line risk test during the open house and take home resources that help residents prevent or manage diabetes.  See the very latest in insulin pumps, glucose monitors, and treatments and meet WCA diabetes education team.  Guests can enter to win a spa basket door prize.  First 200 guests receive a free tote bag!
