Jamestown, New York (Wednesday, August 19, 2015)— When it comes to gardening, WCA Hospital Wellness, the Jamestown Renaissance Corporation and GROW Jamestown Garden Project are all Thumbs Up! Inspired by the concept to partner with a local agency who shares the same Mission of healthy living as the hospital, Toni DeAngelo, R.N., WCA Hospital Community Health & Wellness Director, contacted Shannon Bessette, Jamestown Renaissance Corporation GROW Jamestown volunteer, to invite her to lend a helping hand in nurturing the garden beds at WCA Hospital and Jones Memorial Health Center (JMHC) campus.

The WCA Hospital garden beds were recently recognized as a 2015 GROW Jamestown garden.  GROW Jamestown is a community-wide partnership to promote gardening, landscaping, and other greening activities throughout Jamestown. Collectively, these efforts promote neighborhood beautification and revitalization, healthy lifestyles, civic engagement, and the productive reuse of vacant lots and underutilized spaces.

“We are so excited about our cooperative garden project,” said Toni who has cultivated the gardens at WCA Hospital and JMHC over the past several years.  “Workplace gardening inspires patients, visitors, and employees to take an interest in the origins of plant-based foods.

With the encouragement and support of Jamestown Renaissance Corporation and Shannon’s green thumb in the gardens, we are growing and producing an abundance of fresh, tasty vegetables and savory herbs.”

The hospital’s garden bounty will be donated to new Mothers being cared for at the New York Surgical Hospitalist at WCA Hospital Prenatal/OB Program.  “Fresh vegetables are amazing fuel for the development of the unborn infant and Mom,” Toni explains.  “Good nutrition is top priority for prenatal care and food that is nutritionally rich is the best start for the unborn baby.  Food plays a critical role in the development of a human baby.  It is the best start to a new beginning for Mom and unborn infant.”

Shannon tells us that food has the power to impact us on a level deeper than just our physical well-being.  “Sharing food conveys that we care about others,” says Bessette who planned, prepared and cultivated the garden beds at WCA and JMHC together with boyfriend, Quentin Yeager.  “Sharing our delicious bounty from the garden to those who may not have access to fresh produce, demonstrates how much we care about them and is a beautiful tribute to the well-being of others.”
