Jamestown, New York (Thursday, May 28, 2015)—WCA Hospital is pleased to announce that Brenda L. Fitzgerald, R.N., WCA Heart Center Cardiac Rehab Specialist, was named the “2015 Nurse of Distinction” at a special breakfast held in celebration of National Nurses Week.

The distinguished tradition at WCA Hospital began in 1989 when Elaine Hoglin was selected the first Nurse of Distinction.  WCA Hospital awards the distinction to an outstanding Registered Nurse who exemplifies the mission and vision of WCA Hospital.  The award is given to a nurse who displays outstanding achievement; is a role model; possesses professional standards and leadership skills; is an advocate for healthcare and the nursing profession; and is involved in his or her community.  The honoree is nominated by his or her colleagues and selected by the Nurse of Distinction Committee comprised of recipients from previous years.

“We have a long tradition of great nurses that provide patient-focused care to our families, friends and neighbors,” said Emelia Lindquist, R.N., WCA Hospital Emergency Department Nurse Manager who gave the opening remarks at the celebration.  “As I look around, I see so many individuals that have dedicated many years to our hospital and community. I am very proud to work with so many talented and compassionate people.  WCA is so much more than the brick and mortar that form these walls.  It is the talented team of our nurse aids, unit clerks, L.P.N.s, and so many other support team members that are a very big part of the interdisciplinary approach needed to deliver the high quality care we provide at WCA.  Brenda, this year’s Nurse of Distinction, embodies all of the outstanding qualities of leadership, advocacy, community involvement and is a role model for other nurses.  Nominated by her peers, she supports her patients with physical and emotional support treating each patient as if he or she was her family.  Today, we pay special tribute to Brenda for her excellent care and compassion toward our patients.”

Other nomination remarks on behalf of Brenda stated she acts as an advocate for her patients and their families and serves as charge nurse for the WCA Heart Center cardiac rehab team, coordinating and teaching educational and basic arrhythmia instructional courses. She is very active in the community serving as President of the Crèche Board of Directors and is a volunteer member of the local Norden Women’s Club.

“I am shocked and humbled,” said Brenda who began her career at WCA Hospital in November 24, 1980, when she accepted the position of registered nurse.  “I do what I do because I believe I can make a difference in the recovery of our patients.”

Brenda resides in Bemus Point, New York, with husband, John.  She has four grown children, Michael, Michele, Sean, Shannon and four grandchildren, Bre, Ryan, Brady, and Kyndall.

A graduate of the nursing program at Jamestown Community College (J.C.C.), Brenda began her registered nurse in 1980.    She was transferred to a cardiology nurse position on April 17, 1984.  Employed as a Special Care Nurse from 1980 until 1994, Brenda was promoted to Senior Cardiology Nurse in July of 2000.  She currently serves as the Cardiac Rehab Specialist in the WCA Heart Center.  She has been instrumental in planning and coordinating the annual WCA Heart event, held each year to raise awareness about heart disease and ways to prevent cardiac illness.

Award finalists for the 2015 Nurse of Distinction were Tammy Eggleston, R.N., 4D Nursing Unit; Bethany Jackson, R.N., 5D Nursing Unit; and Jenny Rader, R.N., 2B Maternity Care Center.
