JAMESTOWN, NY (Wednesday, April 8, 2015)—WCA Hospital recently held its Doctor’s Day Luncheon commemorating the National Doctor’s Day observance that saluted the medical staff at WCA which consists of 137 dedicated physicians representing more than 30 medical and surgical specialties.  Ronald Klizek, M.D., board-certified radiologist on staff at WCA Hospital for 33 years, received the prestigious Physician of the Year Award during the ceremonial event.

The Physician of the Year Award is chosen by the past three presidents of the Medical Staff of WCA Hospital.  Announcing this year’s recipient was Timothy Brown, M.D., president of the WCA Medical Staff who expressed his thanks and appreciation to guests.  The distinction is given annually to an outstanding physician in Chautauqua County on the medical staff distinguishing him or her for significant practice experience, compassion, community involvement, and a commitment to a healthier community.

A Western New Yorker most of his life, award honoree Dr. Klizek, was instrumental in establishing the guiding principles for the hospital’s Physician of the Year Award. “I am honored to receive this award and appreciate your kind words,” Dr. Klizek said when accepting the award.  “I wanted to establish an award that would honor my colleagues who are on the forefront of clinical medicine and practice medicine on the front-lines—treating patients, being there when patients are dying, and making the life and death decisions that we all face sometime in our careers.  Likewise, I thought that it was imperative to recognize physicians who are part of continuing medical education and wanted to be sure that this distinction was given to those who are on the cutting-edge of medicine and involved in community service as well as taking the impetus of working with the hospital.  I have been very fortunate to work at WCA Hospital alongside a great administrative team and humbled by and appreciate today’s recognition from my colleagues.  Thank you.”

A member of the medical staff at WCA Hospital since 1982, Dr. Klizek received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Niagara University in Niagara Falls, New York.  He received his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York, and completed an internship in diagnostic radiology and fellowship in diagnostic imaging from the University Hospital Upstate Medical Center.  Board-certified in radiology, Dr. Klizek moved to the Chautauqua County area in 1982 when he joined Jamestown Radiologists.  Throughout his tenure with WCA Hospital, Dr. Klizek has provided exemplary service in many medical leadership roles including president of the hospital’s medical staff in 2005 and ongoing membership with the WCA Hospital Board of Directors.  He resides in Lakewood, New York, with his wife Denise, and has two grown children, a son and daughter.

“We are delighted to recognize Dr. Klizek as physician of the year and I want to offer my personal congratulations,” Betsy T. Wright, FACHE, WCA Hospital President/CEO, said.  “We are so very privileged to have some of the most highly-skilled physicians in this region, right here at WCA.  Our annual celebration gives us an opportunity to honor our physicians for their hard work and devotion to our patients. Today, we extend special praise for the excellent service that our physicians give to our hospital, patients and community.”

Past honorary Physicians of the Year who were recognized at the event included, Bert Rappole, M.D., honored in 2005; Richard Lisciandro, M.D., honored in 2006; Ranjit Laha, M.D., honored in 2007; Sawaran S. Bambrah, M.D., honored in 2008; Robert Ungerer, M.D., honored in 2009, Bill Toms, M.D., honored in 2010; Bhagwandas Sutaria, M.D., honored in 2011; Randall Swanson, M.D., honored in 2012; John LaMancuso, M.D., honored in 2013; James Dahlie, M.D., honored in 2014.

The first Doctor’s Day, held on March 30, 1930, in Winder, Georgia, was inspired by the wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond and marks the anniversary of the first use of general anesthesia in surgery by Dr. Crawford W. Long in 1842.  On March 30, 1958, the United State House of Representatives adopted a resolution commemorating Doctor’s Day.  In 1990, the congress and the senate approved legislation establishing National Doctor’s Day.  The resolution designating March 30th as National Doctor’s Day was signed by President George Bush.
