Nuclear Medicine Program
Nuclear Medicine is a branch of medical imaging that utilizes small amounts of radioactive materials to diagnose and treat a variety of diseases, including many types of cancers, heart disease and certain other abnormalities within the body.
The UPMC Chautauqua WCA Nuclear Medicine Program, accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR), provides our community with the a number of nuclear medicine exams in our area. We offer all general nuclear medicine exams as well as many specialized nuclear exams and treatments.
The program staffs board-certified Radiologists, certified and licensed Nuclear Medicine Technologists, and works closely with a professional and Nuclear Cardiology nursing and technical staff.
- Variety of equipment: The program hosts a variety of equipment that serves many uses for our community such as two full service SPECT gamma cameras. A PET/CT unit is also available along with a thyroid uptake probe.
- Low dose exams: The program understands the importance of utilizing the lowest doses of radiation possible to obtain the best quality tests. Our nuclear stress testing protocol utilizes the lowest radiation dose available to the patient.
- PACS: The Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) allows for an exam to be compared to previous studies and correlated to other studies for interpretation. This gives greater confidence in the interpretation of the exam. This is also a great tool for referring physicians, giving them the ability to review the results and see the images from the comfort of their medical office. There are numerable advantages to digital images such as image manipulation and the availability to easily share images with other institutes.
- Full service imaging services: Nuclear Medicine complements the diagnostic services at UPMC Chautauqua WCA which include X-Ray, CT imaging, MRI imaging (including Breast MRI imaging), PET/CT imaging, Mammography screening, Ultrasound services, DEXA, and Interventional Radiology.
